|Dear Parent or Guardian,
During the 2011-2012 school year, Mississippi sought and received waivers from certain No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements through the ESEA Flexibility Request. The purpose of this letter is to describe the educational opportunities made possible by Mississippi’s Flexibility Request and to help you understand what the Request will mean for you and your child.
Your child’s school, Columbus High School, has been identified as a Focus School because it is among schools with the lowest achieving subgroups in the state. The school has conducted a comprehensive needs assessment and will implement the following interventions:
• Common assessments are being administered in Subject Area classes and their feeder classes. Data collected from these tests will be used to identify areas of mastery and to re-teach skills needed for success on Subject Area tests.
• Professional Learning Communities have been implemented to assist teachers with lesson planning, development of effective instructional strategies, and data review
The school will also develop and implement an action plan that addresses areas of deficiency. Through improvement objectives and a system of continuous monitoring, the school will evaluate the action plan throughout the year. An Advisory / Action / Focus (AAF) Team will be established and will actively participate in action plan implementation.
